Gourmet Gardening... Basil by Debbie Beckett

Sweet basil is so spicy and is such a beautiful herb.
There over 50 varieties of basil, my favorite is Genovese Basil. It is sweet, mildly spicy and is an essential ingredient in spaghetti sauce and pesto. Ah, pesto!

Basil is an annual and is beautiful in your vegetable garden, flower garden, and in your container gardens as well. Genovese Basil is such a lovely color of green, it makes a beautiful accent plant.
It is a tender annual so plant outdoors after danger of frost has past.

Basil is charming on the kitchen window sill in the winter months, and provides fresh herbs for tomato dishes. I have heard it said that basil goes with tomatoes the way cinnamon goes with apples!  Indeed!

If you have never grown basil, I encourage you to try it. I think you too might make it one of your favorites!

     PESTO
2 cups washed fresh basil
3 cloves of garlic
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
Pulverize everything in the blender or food processor, except the cheese, which is added in lastly.
Serve on noodles or tomato slices, or on warm bread. Yummy... From the garden!
